Demographic expertise—around the world—on demand
Government statistical offices face ever greater challenges. Users demand more information. Budgets are strained. Training and retaining professional staff is a continuing challenge. I have been working with national statistical offices and international organizations for over 30 years. My style of work is responsive, collaborative, and emphasizes knowledge transfer.
Field logistics and data capture pose continuing challenges. More data collection activities demands more coordination. Through it all we need to stay focused on user needs.
Scrutinize data closely before releasing it to users! This is the essence of analysis. Visual presentation and metadata are important. ITC has created new possibilities for dissemination.
Users want to know the future. Projections address this need, but require a base population and parameters of change. Estimation and projection go together.
External assessments can persuade users of data quality, adjust user expectations, and resolve contentious issues. Focus may be a data collection operation or a competency.
Training is most effective when programs are tailored to specific people with specific responsibilities and delivered on location as needed.
Statistical advocacy is key to increasing resources for statistical work. Advocacy is needed from the highest levels of government to the widest public arenas.
